Howden Marsh
Howden Marsh: our local nature reserve
This nature reserve is a haven for local wildlife, dog walkers and explorers alike. It’s hard to believe that such a tranquil space can be located right next to the town centre. The boardwalk allows access for all and offers a peaceful retreat from daily life, with visitors appreciating the ever-changing scenic views throughout the year.
The history of Howden Marsh
The picturesque reserve hasn’t always been easy on the eye. In fact, it was built on an ancient wetland common before becoming a dumping ground for rubbish. However, in 1974, the land was leased to Howden Town Council who have managed the site ever since. The space has been planted, dug, and drained to unveil a pond, wetlands, and grasslands surrounded by the boardwalk – originally built from a dismantled railway and recently renovated.
What can I expect to find at Howden Marsh?
You’ll never have the same walk around Howden Marsh twice, which is in part thanks to the natives that inhabit it. This natural habitat is home to a wide range of migrant and resident bird species, including ducks, moorhens, coots, and finches. In the ponds, you’ll find perch and pine. Over in the grasslands, amphibians and insects are often busy making themselves at home.
It’s not all about the wildlife though, as the picnic area also offers a respite and retreat from which to view the changeable scenery. Take in the wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs – if you wait long enough, you’ll be sure to discover which wildlife call the grasslands home.
Planning your visit
Being a nature reserve, there are limited facilities on-site. Luckily, Howden Marsh is right next to the town centre, so you can find toilets and parking for visitors within a few minutes’ walk. Whilst the space is dog friendly, we ask that paws are kept under control!
In terms of accessibility, the boardwalk makes the route surprisingly straightforward, meaning buggies and wheelchairs are welcome to explore.
For every generation to enjoy
Getting back to nature is a pastime made for any age. We invite you to explore Howden Marsh and all it has to offer throughout the seasons.
